Peter B. “Pete” Byford, NMTC Program Senior Manager

As NMTC Program Senior Manager, Mr. Byford sources capital for qualified projects through the strategic use of the New Markets Tax Credit program administered by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Prior to joining tag, Mr. Byford served as General Counsel and Executive Vice President of S.B. Phillips Co., Inc. where he provided legal counsel and participated on the executive management team. Previous experience also includes serving as President of Banker Exchange, LLC, a national qualified intermediary for Section 1031 tax deferred exchanges. His expertise has made him a frequent speaker on various topics within the field of tax-deferred exchanges and other methods of strategic tax transactions.

Mr. Byford began his career as a tax and corporate attorney with the law firm of Leatherwood Walker Todd & Mann, P.C. in Greenville, S.C. (now Smith Moore Leatherwood, LLP), where he advised business clients with respect to all aspects of their business operations.  In addition to serving as counsel for commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions on behalf of his clients, he often assisted them in the structuring and coordination of tax advantaged transactions.

Mr. Byford received his LLM in taxation from the University of Denver and a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law.  He is also a graduate of the Citadel with a B.A. in English. He is actively involved in the thriving community of Greenville, S.C. where he has served as Treasurer of the Advisory Board to the Salvation Army of Greenville and the Capital Campaign Executive Committee of the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Commissioners of The Housing Authority of the City of Greenville, South Carolina.
